13 Hot Topics in Multiple Sclerosis [November 2017] 142 nd Annual Meeting of the American Neurological Association 2017 October 15–17, 2017 San Diego, California Highlights of selected presentations from the 2017 conference MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS Calorie Restriction Diets and Changes in the Metabolome in People with Multiple Sclerosis. Presented at the 142nd Annual Meeting of the American Neurological Association (ANA) 2017, Kathryn Fitzgerald researched the effect of calorie restriction on patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). Past research has found that fasting in mice helps to delay the effects of MS, reduces pro-inflammatory cytokines, and promotes oligodendrocyte precursor regeneration. In this human study, 36 people were randomly given one of three diets for an eight-week period. The three diets were 1) 22-percent reduction in daily caloric needs, 2) 75-percent reduction in caloric needs two days per week, and 3) 100-percent caloric needs with no restrictions. Of the 31 patients who completed the trial, patients who had some sort of calorie restriction lost an average of 7.3 pounds over eight weeks and did not vary much between the two restricted diets. Researchers, who took blood samples for metabolomics at baseline, Week 4, and Week 8, found that calorie-restricted patients had an increase in acyl-carnitine metabolites and sphingolipids, as well as decreases in plasmalogens and phosphatidyl choline metabolites. They hope to do future studies that show the integration of changes between the metabolome and gut microbiome. Absract M279 Improving the Quality of Interprofessional Care in Multiple Sclerosis: Emerging Role of a Pharmacist at a Large Academic Multiple Sclerosis and Neuroinflammation Center. Disease modifying therapies (DMTs) have frequently been used to treat multiple sclerosis (MS), but they often come with serious risks and side effects that must be monitored over time. At ANA 2017 in San Diego, California, Lynn D. Do shared results of her research on the role of the pharmacist at a center for MS and how DMTs can be administered safely and appropriately. The study measured the effectiveness of the University of California San Francisco MS and Neuroinflammation Center for a nine-month period. Over that time period, there were 152 interventions "that prevented potential medication adverse effects" in a variety of categories, such as drug monitoring and drug access. The center is in the process of establishing new and updated practices to improve efficiency, such as revising a standard DMT safety monitoring protocol and developing a standard format for patient education. Overall, the study concludes that having a pharmacist in an MS treatment center is important in maximizing patient care that likely will improve even more once the updated protocols are implemented. Abstract S277 Integrating the Patient Voice into Continuing Medical Education Results in Improved Clinician Knowledge and Performance in Multiple Sclerosis. Presented by Jamie C. Reiter at ANA 2017, the study focused on the relationship between patients and the process of continuing medical education (CME) and how to maximize patient outcome in multiple sclerosis (MS). The study was done after a previous CME activity featured audio recordings of actual patients. There were 200 healthcare providers (HCPs) who participated in a pre-survey that measured knowledge, confidence, competence, and performance in MS. Twenty-seven HCPs took the post-survey as well, which was administered three months after the activity. Researchers found significantly better survey responses in the post-test compared to the pre-test on a variety of topics, such as identifying effective agents for treating relapsing forms of MS. The investigator reported that integrating the patient into the CME process was effective in increasing HCP learning for MS. Abstract S278 Validation of Novel Automated Method for White Matter Lesion Segmentation in Multiple Sclerosis. At ANA 2017, Jenny J. Feng presented research on white matter lesion segmentation in multiple sclerosis (MS), a major area of research in MS because of its role in the identification of disease activity.
